Summer Sessions Office Thanks Students for Feedback

In October 2008, the Office of Distance Learning and Summer Sessions issued a survey to Virginia Tech undergraduate student population to gather feedback to share with colleges and departments in scheduling courses for the 2009 Summer Sessions program.

The survey, which consisted of seven questions, employed the survery.vt.edu instrument tool. A total of 3,758 students responded, representing 16% of the undergraduate population.

Respondent Demographics:

Respondents included:

  • Juniors - 31%
  • Sophomores - 26%
  • Seniors - 22%
  • Freshman - 21%.

Reasons for Attending 2009 Summer Sessions:

35% indicated they would be taking summer courses for the 2009 session, while 38% of respondents have not yet decided whether or not they would take courses in summer 2009

Primary reason why students would enroll for courses in Summer 2009

  • 31%: “I want to catch up or maintain progress towards my degree”.
  • 22%: “I want to accelerate progress towards my degree”
  • 10%: “The courses I want are offered in the summer”
  • 07%: “My ability to find a summer job to pay for tuition.”
  • 27%: No response

Secondary reason why students would enroll for courses in Summer 2009

  • 19%: “I want to accelerate progress towards my degree”
  • 14%: “The courses I want are offered in the summer”
  • 14%: “I want to catch up or maintain progress towards my degree”
  • 11%: “My ability to find a summer job to pay for tuition.”
  • 30%: No response

Summer Session Geographic Locations:

  • 46% of the respondents would prefer to take summer courses on the VT   Blacksburg campus
  • 28% through VTOnline
  • 12% from another college or university
  • 08% through Study Abroad
  • 03% from an extended campus
  • 04% No response
